Big Pros and a Lot of Little Cons: My Visit to St. John's College in Annapolis

Seminar was great; tutorials were awesome. People talked out of class and were often seen arguing on the quad about ideas that came up in their reading.

But all around, minor details (yet important ones) were being overlooked. Stair treads were falling off, dining hall food was of poor quality, people forgot Annapolis existed, and the showers were cold. There were also a lot more smokers than I expected there to be. All minor things, true, but added together, it makes you wonder the reason. Is St. John's running out of money? Is there a problem in the administration? Why are these important things being completely overlooked?

More later,

Virginia

  1. Back in 2008 I was invited to work at St. John's library for two months covering a leave of absence for one of the librarians. The basement of the library was under repair because of an architectural failure and flooding of the collection on the lower level. It was an ongoing repair started before I arrived and unfinished when I left. The librarian has also left since then. I was paid but money may be an issue.
